Tricone rock bits or called tricone bits, rock roller bits, roller cone bits, which is mainly used for oil & gas, mining, water well drilling. In 1933 two Hughes engineers, one of whom was Ralph Neuhaus, invented the tricone bit, which has three cones. The Hughes patent for the tricone bit lasted until 1951, after which time other companies started making similar bits.
There are several factors that affect drill bit selection. Due to the high number of wells that have been drilled, using information from an adjacent well is most often used to make the appropriate selection. A major factor in drill bit selection is the type of formation that needs to be drilled. The effectiveness of a drill bit varies by formation types. There are three types of formations: soft, medium and hard. A soft formation includes unconsolidated sands, clays, soft limestones, red beds and shale. Medium formations include calcites, dolomites, limestones, and hard shale. Hard formations include hard shale, calcites, mudstones, cherty lime stones and hard and abrasive formations. Durability and rate of penetration are two key factors to clarify the bit quality.
Judging from its' cutting structures, there are two types of tricone rock bits. One is Milled tooth rock bits or named as steel tooth rock bits, usually written as MT rock bits, which are manufactured with superior quality steel, advanced technologies, designed for use with compressed air or fluid circulation systems, this new cutting structures allow optimum penetration rates and long runs even in the most difficult and abrasive formations; the other one is Tungsten carbide insert rock bits, usually written as TCI rock bits, which is mainly used to drill hard and abrasive formations, better wear resistance and excellent cutting abilities when compared with milled tooth type rock bits.

IADC CODE IDENTIFICATION:
Ⅰ. First Digit: 1, 2, and 3 designate STEEL TOOTH BITS with 1 for soft, 2 for medium and 3 for hard formations. 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 designate TUNGSTEN CARBIDE INSERT BITS for varying formation hardness with 4 being the softest and 8 the hardest.
Ⅱ.Second Digit: 1, 2, 3 and 4 are further breakdown of formation with 1 being the softest and 4 the hardest.
Ⅲ.Third Digit: This digit will classify the bit according to bearing/seal type and special gauge wear protection as follows:
1. Standard open bearing roller bit
2. Standard open bearing roller bit, air-cooled
3. Standard open bearing roller bit with gauge protection which is defined as carbide inserts in the heel of the cone
4. Sealed roller bearing bit
5. Sealed roller bearing bit with gauge protection
